Course Overview!

The Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering program focuses on fundamental principles to drive materials innovation and build a better future. It prepares students for industrial roles and doctoral studies. The curriculum emphasizes a strong foundation in materials science and engineering, equipping graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to advancements in various fields. The program's goal is to produce graduates capable of addressing real-world challenges through materials-based solutions, fostering a strong understanding of both theoretical concepts and practical applications.

Course Structure

The 30-unit MS program requires at least 15 units of 5000-level courses. Core requirements include courses covering the engineering of materials, chemistry and physics of materials, mechanical behavior of materials, electronic and magnetic properties of materials, materials characterization, and thermodynamics and kinetics of materials. Elective courses can be chosen from a variety of options in chemistry, engineering, and physics, subject to program director approval. Students can choose between a comprehensive examination (MSE 5960) requiring 12 elective units or a thesis (MSE 5990) requiring 9 units, including MSE 5970 (Graduate Research).
