Course Overview!

The Undergraduate Certificate in Cultural Diversity in Human Services is designed to enhance students' ability to communicate and interact effectively in diverse settings. The program focuses on developing intercultural proficiency, preparing students to be agents of change within organizations and institutions. It emphasizes the importance of accepting, valuing, and honoring diversity in various contexts, including work, community, and family life. The curriculum explores various aspects of cultural diversity within the framework of human services, equipping students with practical skills and knowledge to navigate a multicultural environment.

Course Structure

The certificate program comprises 18 units. Six units are dedicated to required core courses: "Understanding Cultural Diversity Within Human Services" and a practicum focused on serving diverse communities. Three units are devoted to intercultural communication, with choices from courses such as Intercultural Communication, Intercultural Business Communication, and Language Diversity in the U.S. The remaining nine units consist of electives selected from a range of courses covering topics such as race, racism, child and family development in diverse cultural contexts, Latina/o/x communities, literary explorations of racism, the history of U.S. civil rights movements, national identity, diversity and justice, and multicultural psychology, among others. These electives offer a broad exploration of cultural diversity from multiple disciplinary perspectives.
