Course Overview!

The Undergraduate Certificate in Applied Gerontology at California State University, Los Angeles is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to work effectively with older adults, particularly multiethnic and multiracial elderly populations. It caters to students seeking career changes or those already in the field looking to advance their careers. The program covers various aspects of gerontology, combining biological, sociological, psychological, and social work perspectives on aging. Course Structure

The certificate program requires a total of 21 units. This includes 12 units of core courses covering the biology of aging, sociology of aging, social policy and aging, and psychology of adult development and aging. Three units are dedicated to a required field experience/internship (HHS 4950) arranged through the Applied Gerontology Institute. The remaining 6 units consist of electives chosen from a variety of courses related to aging, including options in anthropology, communication disorders, literature, kinesiology, nutrition, nursing, philosophy, religion, and social work. Students must have approval from a certificate advisor when choosing their electives.
