This post-baccalaureate certificate program prepares students with non-communication disorders undergraduate degrees for entry into master's programs in Speech-Language Pathology. The curriculum covers fundamental aspects of human communication and swallowing processes, encompassing biological, neurological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, linguistic, and cultural perspectives. Students will also learn about various communication and swallowing disorders and differences, including their causes, characteristics, and related anatomical, physiological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, linguistic, and cultural factors. Successful completion requires a minimum 3.0 GPA and a grade of 'C' or better in each course. Completion of the program does not guarantee admission to Cal State LA's MA program in Speech-Language Pathology.
The program consists of 39 units of coursework. Specific courses include Hearing Science, Audiology and Audiometry, Rehabilitative Audiology, Language Development, Research Methods in Communication Disorders, Introduction to Language Science, Descriptive Phonetics, Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech Mechanism, Neuroscience of Communication, Primary and Secondary Language Disorders in Children and Adolescents, Fluency and Speech Sound Disorders, Communication Disorders in Voice, Cleft Palate, and Cerebral Palsy, and Cultural/Linguistic Diversity in Communication Disorders.
