Course Overview!

The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Postsecondary Reading at California State University, Los Angeles is designed to prepare professionals to teach reading to adults. The program integrates theory and practice, equipping students with the skills and competencies necessary for effective instruction in community college or adult education settings. The curriculum focuses on adult reading pedagogy, incorporating various teaching methodologies and assessment techniques. Students will engage in practical experience through fieldwork and clinical practice, applying their knowledge in real-world scenarios. The program emphasizes understanding the diverse needs of adult learners and creating inclusive learning environments. Successful completion requires a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Course Structure

The 15-unit certificate program includes required courses focusing on advanced teaching of reading, reading and writing clinical practicum, fieldwork in reading and related language arts, and policies and practices for emergent bilingual students. Students choose one elective from options such as research and politics of literacy, advanced teaching of writing, advanced literacy assessment and instruction, equity and justice-oriented models in K-12 STEM education, children's and young adult literature, or EFL/ESL reading-writing connections. Prerequisites include a teaching credential or completion of specific reading methodology courses such as EDSE 4501 and EDSE 4502 or their equivalents.
