Course Overview!

This post-baccalaureate certificate program equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge for careers in higher education and career counseling. The curriculum focuses on developing competencies in job development, integrated life planning, career development theories, higher education and career counseling techniques, occupational information, community resources, cross-cultural counseling approaches, and specialized career counseling for diverse populations. The program emphasizes the intersection of rehabilitation counseling and higher education/career counseling, making it particularly suitable for students already enrolled in the M.S. in Counseling (Rehabilitation Counseling) program at California State University, Los Angeles. Graduates will be prepared to work in various settings, supporting students and individuals in their academic and career pursuits.

Course Structure

The certificate program requires 12 units of coursework, spread across four core courses. Three mandatory courses are COUN 5100 (Counseling Students in Higher Education), COUN 5140 (Introduction to Rehabilitation Counseling), and COUN 5161 (Seminar: Higher Education Counseling). Students then choose one elective course from either COUN 5149 (Employment and Career Development) or SOC 5410 (Seminar: Gender and Labor). Successful completion of the certificate requires a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (B).
