Course Overview!

The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Clinical Laboratory Science is a one-year program designed to prepare students for the American Society of Clinical Pathology Medical Laboratory Scientist certification exam. The program focuses on providing a strong foundation in various laboratory science disciplines. This program serves as the didactic component of the Cal State LA CLS Training Program, supplementing a year of clinical practical training. Successful completion allows graduates to sit for the certification exam required for licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) in California. The curriculum emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and practical application, equipping graduates with the skills needed for careers in hospital clinical laboratories, commercial reference laboratories, or research and development within biotech companies. The program is approved for federal financial aid. Admission requires a bachelor's degree in a related science and completion of specified prerequisites in chemistry, biology, and physics, along with a minimum GPA. International applicants must meet additional TOEFL requirements and have their credentials evaluated by AACRAO.

Course Structure

The certificate program comprises four advanced studies courses: Advanced Studies in Hematology (MICR 5100, 4 units), Advanced Studies in Transfusion (MICR 5200, 3 units), Advanced Studies in Clinical Chemistry (MICR 5300, 6 units), and Advanced Studies in Medical Microbiology (MICR 5400, 6 units). These courses provide the technical knowledge, critical thinking, and management skills necessary to pass the American Society for Clinical Pathologists certification exam for Medical Laboratory Scientists. The program includes both didactic lectures and practical clinical training, totaling 19 units. Students are expected to complete a year-long clinical training component in addition to the didactic coursework.
