The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Clinical Genetic Molecular Biology Science is a one-year program designed to prepare students for the American Society of Clinical Pathology Technologist in Molecular Biology certification exam, a requirement for licensure as a Clinical Genetic Molecular Biologist Scientist (CGMBS) in California. The program includes both didactic coursework and a clinical training component. The didactic component focuses on providing students with the technical knowledge, critical thinking, and management skills necessary for success in the field. Students will learn about molecular testing for cancers, genetic disease markers, histocompatibility types, and some infectious diseases. The program is approved as a Gainful Employment Program, making students eligible for federal financial aid. Successful completion of the program equips graduates with the expertise to perform molecular diagnostic tests in various settings, including hospital clinical laboratories, commercial reference laboratories, and biotech companies.
The program consists of two main components: a didactic component and a clinical training component. The didactic component, which is the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program, consists of 12 units of coursework focusing on advanced studies in molecular diagnostics. The courses are delivered through the College of Professional and Global Education in special sessions. The clinical training component requires a full academic year (52 weeks, 4 days/week, 8 hours/day) of hands-on experience, along with one 6-hour day per week of face-to-face classes. This clinical training takes place in approved California Laboratory Field Services affiliated labs. The curriculum emphasizes the theoretical and practical aspects of molecular diagnostics, covering various techniques and applications relevant to the profession.
