The MEXT Graduate Scholarship for Research Students is reserved for individuals who are looking to or are already enrolled in any Master's or PhD program, to gain higher studies. The MEXT scholarships have 2 screenings in which you must pass to get a chance to study there. You can apply at Japanese embassy to know the rules and regulations of your particular programs and dates to apply/submit documents within. You are allowed to choose and apply to your three preferred universities and get up to 2 provisional acceptance letters. This research scholarship is includes duration of 2 to 3 years, according to the course and degree selections. You can apply for any department other than Traditional Entertainment Arts or Subjects that require practical trainings in techniques or technologies at companies or factories. Health sciences students cannot practice or participate in clinical trainings without License from Relevant Ministery

Degree: For Non-Regular Students in October Term: September or October 2026 until the end of March 2028. For Non-Regular Students in April Term: April 2026 until the end of March 2028.

To be eligible for the MEXT Research Program Scholarship, applicants must meet specific academic, age, and residency requirements.
Nationality
Applicants must have the nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan.
Age
Applicant must be born on or after April 2, 1991 (exceptions for applicants with serious circumstances like military service, conditions of war etc)
Japanese Language
Applicant must be willing to learn Japanese language.
Health Certificate
Applicant must provide proof of health that they are clear to travel and study.

Fill your application
Complete the MEXT Research/Graduate Scholarship form by entering your Personal, Educational, and Research-related details. Upload required documents such as academic transcripts, degree certificates, research plan, and recommendation letters. Double-check all entries before proceeding.
Review & Submit
Before finalizing, you’ll be shown a summary of your application. Carefully review all entered details and uploaded documents. Once confirmed, WWAH will compile your complete application package, including your research proposal and academic documentation. You’ll receive a downloadable PDF and checklist to print and submit to the Japanese Embassy as required.

Document Screening & Interview (First Screening)
The First Screening for the MEXT Research/Graduate Scholarship is conducted by the Japanese Embassy and includes document review, Japanese and English language tests, and an interview. Applicants must show strong academics, a clear research plan, and sufficient language skills for research in Japan. The interview assesses motivation, university awareness, and communication ability. English test exemptions may apply for certain countries. Passing this stage does not guarantee the scholarship but allows progression to the Second Screening and university placement. WWAH will notify you of interview dates and assist with sample questions and personalized preparation tips.
University Placement Process
After passing the embassy’s first screening, you will contact Japanese universities to obtain “Letters of Acceptance” from professors in your intended research field. WWAH will guide you through this outreach process, including drafting emails and refining your research proposal. Once you receive at least one Letter of Acceptance, you must submit it to the embassy within the given deadline. This enables your final nomination to MEXT.
Second Screening & University Placement
After the First Screening, MEXT conducts a Second Screening and selects applicants based on their screening results and university placement status. Those with letters of provisional acceptance are usually placed at one of their preferred universities listed in the Placement Preference Form. National universities may be prioritized due to budget limits. If accepted into a regular graduate course, applicants may directly enter it. Those lacking sufficient Japanese may undergo a 6-month preparatory language course. WWAH will keep you informed of your placement status and guide you through next steps until your university assignment is confirmed.
