Work while Studying
International students in New Zealand on a valid student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during the academic semester and full-time (40 hours per week) during breaks, such as summer vacation.
Post-Study Work Visa
Upon completing their studies, international students can apply for a Post-Study Work Visa, which allows them to remain in New Zealand to work and gain relevant work experience. The duration of this visa depends on the level of qualification: If a student completes a Bachelor’s degree or higher qualification, they can apply for a 3-year post-study work visa. For qualifications below a bachelor’s degree, students can apply for a 1-year post-study work visa.
How to Get Permanent Residency in New Zealand as an International Student?
• To be eligible for PR, you must first complete a recognized qualification in New Zealand. Typically, a Bachelor’s degree or higher (Master’s or PhD) from an accredited institution is required.
• Once you finish your studies, apply for a Post-Study Work Visa. This allows you to stay and work in New Zealand after your studies.
• After obtaining your Post-Study Work Visa, work in New Zealand in a skilled occupation that aligns with your qualifications.
• Once you have the required work experience, you can apply for a Skilled Migrant Visa (SMV). This is the most common pathway to obtaining PR in New Zealand. The application process involves submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI), where you will be awarded points based on factors like age, work experience, qualifications, and job offers. You need a minimum of 160 points to be invited to apply for PR under the SMC.
• If your EOI is selected, you will be invited to apply for permanent residency. This involves submitting documentation related to your qualifications, work experience, and health status, along with a police clearance certificate.
• After your application is processed and approved, you will be granted Permanent Residency (PR), which allows you to live and work in New Zealand indefinitely. If you meet certain criteria, such as staying in New Zealand for a certain number of years, you may also qualify for New Zealand citizenship after some time.
• For getting Citizenship of New Zealand, You need to have held Permanent Residency (PR) for at least 5 years, must have lived in New Zealand for the majority of those 5 years, demonstrate a commitment to New Zealand and have good character.
• Once you will get New Zealand Citizenship, you may apply for New Zealand Passport. The processing time will be 10 working days.
