Graduates can apply for a 12-month job search permit to find employment or start a business. This permit allows them to stay legally in Italy after graduation.
• Obtain a degree from an Italian university (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD).
• Apply for a Job Search Visa (valid for 12 months) if you need time to find a job. Find a job and convert your student visa into a work permit (Permesso di Soggiorno per Lavoro Subordinato).
• Your employer may need to apply under Italy’s Decreto Flussi (work visa quota system).
• Stay in Italy continuously for at least 5 years on a valid work permit. Ensure you pay taxes and contribute to social security.
• After 5 years, apply for a Permesso di Soggiorno UE per Soggiornanti di Lungo Periodo (EU Long-Term Residence Permit). Requirements include: Proof of stable income & employment. Clean criminal record. Italian language proficiency (A2 level or higher).
• Once approved, you get permanent residency, allowing you to live and work in Italy indefinitely. This also provides freedom to work in other EU countries with fewer restrictions.
• After obtaining citizenship, apply for an Italian Passport at the local Questura (Police Headquarters) or your nearest Italian consulate. The processing time will be 10–15 days after application submission.
