Jonkoping University is a young, private, non profit Swedish institution established in 1994, known for its strong international profile, entrepreneurial spirit, and close collaboration with the surrounding community and business sector. Located in the city of Jonkoping in Southern Sweden, JU is one of the top universities in the country for international student exchange and is home to approximately 16,000 students, including around 2,400 international students from over 100 countries. Education and research are conducted across its four specialized schools: the Jonkoping International Business School (JIBS), the School of Engineering, the School of Education and Communication, and the School of Health and Welfare. Many of its programs, which include Bachelor's, Master's, and doctoral degrees in specific fields, are taught in English and feature hands-on, career-focused learning to ensure high student employability.
(1977) Origins and Establishment
Jonkoping University's history can be traced back to earlier educational institutions in the city, such as a state university college established in 1977 as Hogskolan i Jonkoping, which incorporated existing teacher and health education programs. However, its current structure and modern establishment began on July 1, 1994, when the Jonkoping University Foundation was founded with strong regional support from local businesses and municipalities. This transformation made it one of Sweden's first independent, private, non-profit higher education institutions, organized into three initial schools: the School of Education and Communication, the School of Engineering, and Jonkoping International Business School.
Modern Day Development
Jonkoping University's modern-day development is defined by a strong focus on internationalization, entrepreneurship, and collaboration with society and business. As a young, professional-oriented institution, JU attracts a high number of international students and staff, fostering a multicultural campus environment and boasting over 330 partner universities globally, including participation in alliances like EULiST and Mirai 2.0. Research and education are applied, focusing on key areas like entrepreneurship, technology/industrial product development, health and welfare, and sustainability. JU is actively working to strengthen the link between education and the regional labor market through initiatives like Project STAY and Project PLACE, aiming to encourage graduates, particularly international ones, to remain in the region. Furthermore, JU is committed to lifelong learning and sustainability, integrating frameworks like the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Inner Development Goals (IDGs) into its curriculum and operations.

Jonkoping University's mission is to be embedded in the region and engaged worldwide, working to bridge knowledge and society by developing the talent of tomorrow. As an international university in the heart of Sweden, it is recognized for its focus on student entrepreneurship, strong research, and successful collaborations. The institution aims to prepare students to meet future needs through a foundation rooted in the Småland region alongside a significant international presence, ensuring their contributions to an ever-changing society.
