CSU was established in 1964 as a state-assisted university. It assumed the tradition of excellence from the former Fenn College, a private institution founded in 1929. The university's roots date back to the 1880s when the Cleveland YMCA began offering day and evening courses. In 1964, the State of Ohio purchased Fenn College's campus and established CSU.
