(1991) Origins and Establishment
The Australian Catholic University (ACU) was officially established in 1991 through the amalgamation of four Catholic tertiary institutions: the Catholic College of Education Sydney, the Institute of Catholic Education in Victoria, McAuley College in Queensland, and Signadou College of Education in the Australian Capital Territory. Each of these institutions had a rich history of training teachers and providing education rooted in Catholic values, dating back to the mid-19th century. This unification aimed to create a national university that upheld Catholic traditions while delivering high-quality education across Australia. Over the years, ACU has experienced remarkable growth, evolving into a modern, globally connected university. It has expanded its presence with seven campuses across Australia and an international campus in Rome, Italy, providing opportunities for global engagement and cultural exchange.
Modern Day Development
Today, ACU is recognized among the top 2% of universities worldwide and continues to be a leader in graduate employability and community impact. By blending its historical foundations with innovative approaches to education and research, ACU remains dedicated to shaping future leaders who contribute meaningfully to their communities and the world.

The mission of the Australian Catholic University (ACU) is to foster the pursuit of knowledge, dignity, and the common good through excellence in education, research, and community engagement, all underpinned by Catholic intellectual traditions.
