Thompson Rivers University (TRU) was originally established as Cariboo College in 1970 in Kamloops, British Columbia, to provide accessible postsecondary education to students in the region. The college's name was later changed to Thompson Rivers University in 2005 to reflect its expanded role as a comprehensive institution offering both undergraduate and graduate programs.
