Munster Technological University (MTU) was established on January 1, 2021, following the merger of Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) and Institute of Technology Tralee (ITT). The process began in the early 2010s as part of Ireland’s plan to create technological universities, enhancing higher education and research. CIT and ITT collaborated for years before formally applying for technological university status in 2019. The merger was approved in May 2020, making MTU Ireland’s second technological university.
