Course Overview!

This undergraduate program at Cleveland State University prepares students for an Adolescent/Young Adult teaching license (grades 7-12) in Ohio. Students pursue a bachelor's degree in their chosen major (e.g., English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science) and concurrently complete the required education coursework and field experiences to earn the license. The program integrates subject-matter expertise with pedagogical skills, emphasizing inquiry-based and project-based learning. Students are expected to develop a teaching portfolio and pass state licensure examinations. The program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and offers specializations in integrated language arts, mathematics, social studies, and sciences, with a combined mathematics and physics option available also.

Course Structure

The program consists of three main components: General Education and Prerequisite Requirements (39-52 hours), Professional Education Requirements (32-44 hours depending on specialization), and Major Requirements (varying depending on the chosen major subject). General education courses fulfill university requirements and offer pre-requisites. Professional education courses cover pedagogical theory and practice, include field experiences such as apprentice teaching (CSUteach), and focus on student interactions, educational psychology, special education and literacy. Major requirements are satisfied by completing a bachelor's degree in the prospective teaching field (e.g., English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Biology, Chemistry). The choice of integrated specialization (Integrated language arts, Integrated Mathematics, Integrated Social Studies, Integrated Sciences, Integrated Mathematics and Physics) further shapes course selection within professional education requirements. Students will consult adviser in their major as well as an advisor in the Education Student Services Center .
