Course Overview!

The PhD program in Adult Development and Aging is a joint program between Cleveland State University and the University of Akron designed to train researchers specializing in cognitive and behavioral aspects of adulthood and aging. The curriculum emphasizes both theoretical understanding and empirical research skills, preparing graduates for careers in academia, research institutions, and community consulting. Students will participate in research projects under the guidance of experienced faculty, with opportunities available at both universities. Successful completion of the program equips graduates to teach, conduct research, and consult on issues related to adult cognitive, motor, perceptual, social-emotional, and behavioral functioning across the lifespan. Emphasis is placed on developing researchers capable of both advancing the field through empirical contributions and applying knowledge to address pressing social concerns.

Course Structure

The program requires coursework at both Cleveland State University and the University of Akron. Core courses include quantitative and computer methods (PSY 601 & 602), multivariate statistics (PSY 701), factor analysis and structural equation modeling (PSY 702), and several specialized courses on various aspects of adult development and aging (PSY 710-716). Students must also complete a research thesis (PSY 699) and dissertation (PSY 899). Additional elective credit hours covering topics such as multilevel linear modeling, independent research, and special topics in adult development and aging can be chosen to cater to individual interests. A master's thesis is completed during the second year, with an M.A. awarded upon completion of 48 credit hours. Following the completion of coursework in the third year, students must successfully pass a written and oral candidacy examination before commencing their dissertation work. A minimum of 96 credit hours is required to earn a PhD.
