The Master of Arts in English at Cleveland State University emphasizes research and critical analysis of literature and composition. The program offers coursework in practical criticism, literary theory, electives in literature and linguistics, and opportunities to study composition theory and teaching writing. Students can pursue the degree part-time or full-time, with courses offered evenings or online. The program is designed to accommodate working students. The curriculum is governed by a departmental Committee on Graduate Studies, handling admissions, graduate assistantships, awards, student petitions, and curriculum policy. The faculty includes scholars in English literary studies, American literature, world literature, and rhetoric and composition, with extensive publications in leading journals and presses. Graduate students have access to the CSU Poetry Center, offering editing and publishing experience.
The MA program has Thesis and Portfolio options. The Thesis option requires 33 credits minimum, including core courses (Literary Analysis and Critical Approaches to Literature), graduate seminars (ENG 695, taken four times), electives (ENG 506 and higher, with one additional seminar recommended), a thesis (ENG 699, with ENG 698 potentially substituting for 3 credits), and a master's examination. The Portfolio option requires 36 credits minimum, including core courses, graduate seminars (ENG 695, taken six times), electives, and a final portfolio of best writing from advanced courses. Teaching assistants must take ENG 506 and ENG 507, with adjustments for students with prior equivalent coursework.
