Course Overview!

Cleveland State University's Graduate Certificate in Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Law & Policy is designed to prepare students for the growing demand for legal professionals in data security and privacy. The curriculum addresses the increasing sophistication of cyberattacks and the complex web of data security and privacy regulations at various levels. The program's flexibility accommodates working professionals and students outside Northeast Ohio through an asynchronous online format. It offers a stackable credential, meaning earned credits can be applied toward a Master of Legal Studies (MLS) in Cybersecurity & Data Privacy or other CSU graduate degrees. The program covers core legal concepts in cybersecurity and data privacy, alongside elective courses providing specialized knowledge in areas such as HIPAA compliance, corporate compliance, cybercrime, and cybersecurity risk assessment. Students will gain both theoretical and practical skills, preparing them for roles in law firms, corporations, or government agencies.

Course Structure

The Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Law & Policy Graduate Certificate requires 12 credit hours. Two core courses, Cybersecurity I (Law 741) and Privacy Law & Management (Law 747), are foundational. Cybersecurity I must be completed before Cybersecurity II. These courses are offered asynchronously online. Students then choose 6 credits from a list of electives. Elective choices include online law electives such as Cybersecurity II, HIPAA and Privacy, Corporate Compliance courses, Cyberlaw, and a cybersecurity technical capstone; law electives like Cybercrime and Cybersecurity Practicum; business college electives like Managing Networks and Security Risks; and an option to get permission to substitute a related technology course.
