The Graduate Certificate in Gerontological Studies at Cleveland State University is designed to prepare students for careers serving the growing older adult population. It offers specializations in clinical roles, gerontology program development, and academic/applied research. The curriculum helps students develop skills and knowledge in areas critical to meeting the needs of older adults. The program leverages the expertise of gerontological professionals from various organizations including Benjamin Rose, Myers Research Institute, Cleveland Clinic, and more. Graduates will be well-prepared for diverse career opportunities in health and human services, business, finance, law, administration, and many other fields.
The certificate requires 13-15 credits. Students choose one overview course (HCA 650 - Long-Term Care or SWK 680 - Aging & Social Work Practice), two electives (from HCA 650, SWK 680, EXS 572 - Physiology of Aging, HSC 526 - Functional Performance of Older Adults, COM 549 - Health Communication, SOC 561 - Aging and the Life Course), and a capstone project (4-5 credits) which may be an internship or a research project approved by the Graduate Gerontology Program Director.
