The Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering (BME) program at Cleveland State University integrates engineering, life sciences, and medicine. Graduates are prepared for diverse careers in research and development, manufacturing, healthcare, biotechnology, and more. The curriculum emphasizes the application of mathematical, physical, and life science principles to engineering problems. Students develop crucial skills in experimental design, data analysis, and the use of engineering tools and techniques. The program offers two tracks: a general BME track and a pre-medicine track, each with specific course requirements and electives.
The BME program comprises core courses in biomedical engineering, science (biology, chemistry, physics), engineering science, mathematics, and ethics. The General BME track includes 10 required BME courses, 12 science courses, 9 engineering science courses, 2 mathematics courses, 1 ethics course, 1 co-op course, and 2 other required courses and 3 elective courses. The Pre-Med Track requires 9 BME courses, 18 science courses, 7 engineering science courses, 2 mathematics courses, 1 ethics course, 1 co-op course, 2 other required courses, 2 electives, 1 Gen Ed Psychology course and 1 Gen Ed Sociology course. Honors Program students must complete an Honors thesis, an additional six credit hours, and may substitute graduation requirements. The curriculum is designed to provide a strong theoretical foundation and practical experience. The courses are designed to be challenging, but rewarding, and will prepare students for a wide range of careers.
