The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Film & Media Arts at Cleveland State University is a comprehensive program designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary for a successful career in the film and media arts industry. The curriculum comprises a core foundation in filmmaking, followed by specialized training in chosen concentrations. Students select two concentrations from options such as Directing, Screenwriting, Producing, Cinematography, Sound, Editing, and Visual Effects. The program emphasizes project-based learning, fostering collaboration, creative problem-solving, and communication through increasingly sophisticated projects over the course of the program. It is a rigorous program that demands a 2.5 GPA to enter and maintain throughout the degree. It also emphasizes the development of essential skills such as creative problem-solving, communication, collaboration, time management, and an understanding of cinematic aesthetics.
The BFA in Film & Media Arts program consists of 120 credit hours, with 72 hours dedicated to the major. The program starts with 12 core filmmaking courses. After successful completion and maintaining a 2.5 GPA, students choose to enter the BFA program and need to complete 18 common core courses. Students then select two concentrations, each requiring three unique courses (six total). An additional six common core courses must be taken, different from the six concentration-specific courses. A Film Studies elective is also required. Concentrations vary, but each involves several specialized courses, and a selection of additional courses to broaden expertise within the chosen area. The program culminates in a thesis project, showcasing the student's skills and knowledge. Students also complete a film & media arts internship to get real-world experience.
