The Bachelor of Science (BS) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Mathematics programs at Cleveland State University provide a comprehensive education in mathematical theory and applications. Students develop strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills through rigorous coursework. The curriculum covers core mathematical areas such as calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and discrete mathematics, along with specialized electives allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests (e.g., actuarial mathematics, applied mathematics, pure mathematics, statistics). The BS program requires a significantly higher number of credit hours compared to the BA program, particularly focusing on the inclusion of physics and additional science courses. Graduates find careers in diverse fields leveraging their analytical abilities, including technology, finance, research, and education.
The BS Mathematics program consists of core mathematics courses, including calculus I and II, linear algebra, differential equations, and discrete mathematics. Students also complete courses in physics and choose electives. Electives allow specialization in areas like actuarial mathematics, applied and computational mathematics, pure mathematics, or statistics, and can be combined with a statistics minor. A senior project (MTH 496) is also required. The BA degree has fewer total credits required. Teacher licensure tracks require additional courses from the College of Public Affairs and Education plus further science courses, depending on whether they are seeking math licensure or combined mathematics and physics licensure. The curriculum emphasizes problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills. Students participate in a junior seminar (MTH 396) and may choose additional 400-level courses to enhance their studies. For Honors students, additional requirements exist.
