The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science at Cleveland State University is a comprehensive program focusing on ecosystem management, pollution's effects on ecosystems, environmental restoration, and pollution prevention strategies. The curriculum covers fundamental aspects of modern environmental science, including laboratory techniques and environmental policy. Students develop skills in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, critical thinking, analysis, experimental design, communication, time management, and problem-solving. The program offers several special tracks: Honors Program, Environmental Biology, Environmental Physical Science, Environmental Technology, Environmental Planning, and a Secondary Teacher Licensure Program. Graduates are well-prepared for entry-level positions in research labs, government agencies (e.g., EPA, US Fish and Wildlife), consulting firms, museums, and education (with licensure). Further education leading to MS or PhD programs is also supported.
The BS in Environmental Science requires 120 credit hours, including 72-74 hours for the major. The core curriculum (56-58 credits) consists of courses in statistics, calculus, physics, chemistry, and introductory and advanced biology, along with foundational environmental science courses covering ecosystems. Students must also select one physical science course and 2 planning/policy courses from pre-approved options. Finally, a capstone course (internship or research) is required. Students choose an environmental track (Environmental Biology, Environmental Physical Science, Environmental Technology, or Environmental Planning) and complete 16 elective credit hours within this area. The Teacher Licensure track requires additional education coursework through the CSUteach program. Honors students complete a research project.
