The Bachelor of Science in Biology at Cleveland State University offers a comprehensive education in the fundamentals of modern biology, encompassing various fields from molecular biology and biochemistry to organismal biology and ecology. Students gain hands-on experience through laboratory training and have the flexibility to tailor their studies. The program equips graduates for a diverse range of careers or for advanced studies in fields such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, or other professional programs. Specializations are available in Medical Laboratory Science (a 3+1 program with a clinical year at Cleveland Clinic), and secondary teacher licensure. An accelerated BS/MS program is also available. The curriculum includes core biology courses covering introductory biology, biochemistry, cell biology, and genetics, as well as elective options to explore specific interests. Core courses also include chemistry, mathematics (calculus or statistics), and physics. The program develops critical thinking, analytical skills, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
The BS Biology program comprises several core components. The Biology Core Courses (26 credits) include introductory biology (two courses with labs), a seminar, and an exit evaluation. Two groups of courses covering plant biology/animal biology/population biology and biochemistry/cell biology/genetics are required each (8 credits total). General Chemistry (12-13 credits) is also required, in addition to Mathematics (calculus or statistics; 6-8 credits) and Physics (8-10 credits). Biology electives (19 credits) allow for specialization, with options including advanced biology courses, Environmental Science courses, some chemistry and pharmacology electives; a maximum number of credits are available from each option. Students may pursue departmental honors or participate in pre-professional tracks for medicine, dentistry, or veterinary science. The Medical Laboratory Science 3+1, Biology with Secondary Teacher Licensure, and other special tracks alter course requirements.
