The Bachelor of Arts in English at Cleveland State University is designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of literature within its historical, cultural, and social contexts, while also honing their writing abilities. The program cultivates critical thinking, strong communication skills (both written and oral), and a deep appreciation for the power of language in shaping our world. Students develop skills in clear, persuasive writing, research project formulation and execution, analysis of language and writing across various dimensions, critical argumentation, and effective presentation of research findings. The major offers concentrations in Literature, Creative Writing, and Secondary English Licensure, each with its own specific requirements.
The BA English program requires a minimum of 120 credit hours, with 39 (or 42/45 for Mandel Honors College students) dedicated to the English major itself. All students must complete core courses in Literary Analysis (ENG 306) and Critical Research Methods (ENG 400). Concentrations then determine further course selections. The Literature concentration focuses on British and American literature across different periods, demanding courses in early and late literature from both countries. A significant portion involves elective courses at the 300 level and above. The Creative Writing concentration requires an introductory course and several workshops, progressing from intermediate to advanced levels. The Secondary English Licensure track includes language and rhetoric courses, period distribution requirements similar to the Literature track, and upper-division electives, culminating in a senior seminar. Mandel Honors College students have additional requirements, including an Honors Research Project and specified Honors/Contract courses.
