Course Overview!

The Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering program at Cleveland State University is a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip students with a strong foundation in mathematics, natural sciences, engineering science, and practical engineering principles. The program focuses on developing students' abilities to analyze and design mechanical devices and systems that improve lives. Graduates will be prepared for a broad range of career options across diverse sectors, including aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, robotics, and more. The program includes coursework in mathematics (Calculus I, II, and Multivariable Calculus), several science courses (chemistry and physics), required engineering science foundations, and specialized mechanical engineering topics. Students engage in hands-on learning experiences that further build technical and problem-solving skills, fostering creative approaches to design and implementation.

Course Structure

The curriculum is structured around a series of core courses, and a sequence of essential courses in each field of basic knowledge. The first two years concentrate on foundational subjects, including mathematics (Calculus I, II, and Multivariable Calculus), general chemistry and lab, physics I and II, engineering ethics, and introductory engineering design and programming. Years three and four involve core mechanical engineering courses such as statics, dynamics, strength of materials, thermodynamics and heat transfer, fluid mechanics, machine design, and control systems. Students will also participate in computer-aided engineering electives, and complete a capstone design project showcasing learned abilities. Several elective options are available to students in their final year, fostering specialization in areas such as mechatronics, HVAC, or specialized manufacturing processes. Honors and University Scholars program options are also available, enhancing the program with opportunities for graduate-level coursework.
