Course Overview!

The Bachelor of Music in Music Education program at Cleveland State University is designed to prepare students for teaching music in K-12 public schools in Ohio. The program includes a rigorous curriculum covering music theory, history, performance, and pedagogy. Students gain practical experience through teaching placements in area schools, and must successfully complete all program requirements and licensure examinations to receive their Ohio PreK-12 teaching license in Music. The program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Course Structure

The program requires 103 credit hours and encompasses general university and College of Arts and Sciences requirements, core music coursework, music education coursework, and student teaching. Core music coursework includes applied music lessons, ensemble participation, music theory (Harmony and Form I-IV, Musicianship I-IV), music history, and ethnomusicology. Music education coursework focuses on teaching methods for various instruments (strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, classroom instruments), vocal techniques, conducting, music in special education, general music methods, choral methods, instrumental methods, curriculum and assessment, and educational psychology. Students maintain a portfolio using TaskStream.
