Course Overview!

The Bachelor of Science in Middle Childhood Education program at Cleveland State University prepares students for teaching children in grades 4 through 9 (ages 8 to 14). The curriculum emphasizes culturally and developmentally responsive instruction, incorporating over 700 hours of clinical experience. Students develop skills in curriculum design, teaching strategies, child psychology, and assessment. The program culminates in an Ohio four-year Resident Educator teaching license in Middle Childhood for two content areas. Emphasis is placed on reflective practice and inquiry, with opportunities for specialization in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, or Social Studies.

Course Structure

The program consists of General Education requirements, professional education courses, a chosen concentration (Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, or Social Studies), and internship experiences. General education courses fulfill university requirements and provide prerequisites. Professional requirements include three rotations focusing on the social context of urban education, assessment and instruction, and students as learners. Literacy courses cover phonics, reading instruction, and content area literacy. The program also includes an internship and capstone experience. Each concentration has a set of specific courses. Students are required to maintain a portfolio throughout their coursework and field experiences. The program also has available Honors Program participation for outstanding students.
