Course Overview!

The Bachelor of Arts in Combined Languages at Clark University offers a unique opportunity to master two languages and cultures, with one language being either Spanish or French. Students can choose a second language from a variety of options including ASL, Chinese, German, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, or Latin. The program emphasizes developing linguistic and cultural competencies, equipping graduates with advanced skills in translation, writing, oral and reading comprehension, and cultural understanding. Students engage in hands-on learning, study abroad opportunities (two units in a country where one chosen language is spoken), and may participate in community-based learning in the Worcester area. The program also incorporates research and critical study of how national languages shape cultural identity.

Course Structure

The Combined Languages major requires a total of 13 courses, eight of which are language courses. Students work closely with a faculty advisor to choose their courses of study. Four additional courses complement the language courses. A required course, 'The National Imagination,' explores how national languages shape cultural identity through texts and films. Students must complete two units of study abroad in a country where one of their chosen languages is spoken (usually counting towards language course requirements). Access to higher-level language classes at other colleges in the Higher Education Consortium of Central Massachusetts and/or directed studies with Clark professors is also available. High-level coursework integrates theory and practice, such as professional translation workshops and analysis of culturally significant works in various languages.
