Course Overview!

The Bachelor of Arts in Climate, Environment, and Society at Clark University is an interdisciplinary program exploring the complex interplay between Earth's natural and human systems in the context of global environmental change. Students examine how climate and environmental transformations are shaped by socioeconomic and cultural processes, and vice versa. The curriculum integrates expertise from geography, economics, sustainability, social justice, and biology. It emphasizes problem-solving and solution-oriented approaches, equipping students to address climate change and other sustainability challenges from multiple disciplinary perspectives. The program fosters a vibrant learning community, connecting students with faculty conducting research in collaboration with organizations like NASA and the National Science Foundation. Graduates are prepared for advanced studies and impactful careers focused on environmental sustainability and justice.

Course Structure

The Climate, Environment, and Society major comprises six components: CES 101 (Introduction to Climate, Environment, and Society); three introductory core courses providing foundational knowledge of Earth's biophysical and societal systems; one quantitative literacy course; two skills courses (options include data visualization and GIS); four elective courses, including 'problems of practice' options; and a capstone experience (internship, upper-level course, directed study, honors project, or research). Students can choose from courses across more than a dozen academic disciplines, tailoring their education to specific interests. Hands-on learning, research opportunities, and involvement with organizations are integral parts of the program.
