Course Overview!

The Undergraduate Certificate in Sustainability Marketing at Cal State LA is designed to equip students and working professionals with a comprehensive understanding of sustainability principles within the marketing field. The program explores environmental and social issues impacting local and global communities, focusing on how to integrate sustainable practices into product design, marketing strategies, and consumption patterns. Students will gain skills to enhance their employment prospects in the growing sector of businesses prioritizing sustainability. The program is interdisciplinary, incorporating perspectives from marketing, social sciences and potentially other fields, to offer a holistic approach to understanding the challenges and solutions related to sustainability marketing.

Course Structure

The certificate requires 18 units (6 courses) in total. A prerequisite is MKT 3100 (Principles of Marketing) or instructor consent. Required courses include MKT 3400 (Consumer Behavior), MKT 3950 (Community-Based Social Marketing), and MKT 4320 (Sustainability Marketing). Students must also complete MKT 4460 (Marketing Research - Quantitative) or MKT 4461 (Marketing Research - Qualitative). Six additional units are selected as electives from a range of marketing courses and also interdisciplinary electives with a sustainability/environmental emphasis, offered across several departments such as Communications, Economics, Engineering, Geography, and Sociology.
