The Master of Arts in Latin at Boston College is a rigorous program designed to provide students with a deep understanding of Latin language and literature within their historical and cultural contexts. The curriculum emphasizes advanced language skills, critical analysis of literary texts, and historical research. Students will develop expertise in translating Latin texts, analyzing literary styles, and interpreting the significance of Latin works within the broader Greco-Roman world and their lasting influence on Western civilization. The program prepares students for careers in secondary education, related fields, or further doctoral study. The program's core involves intensive study of Latin literature, spanning poetry and prose, combined with historical and cultural studies of the Roman world. Students hone crucial skills in translation, interpretation, and critical analysis, expanding their knowledge through independent study and comprehensive examinations.
The MA in Latin program requires 10 courses (30 credits) at the graduate level. The coursework typically includes four courses per year, with options to supplement studies through consortium universities. Students engage in the translation of Latin passages, analyzing these passages within their literary and historical context. This program also includes an independent reading list, modern language proficiency demonstration (usually French or German), and comprehensive written and oral examinations. The written exams involve translating three passages and composing an essay about one of them within its historical context. The oral exam tests the ability to sustain a conversation related to Latin literature in its historical context. A substantial supplementary reading list includes political, social, and literary history texts to provide students with the necessary context.
