Course Overview!

Boston College's Master of Arts in Classics program offers a rigorous, in-depth study of ancient Greek and Roman languages and culture. Students develop strong advanced language skills in both Latin and Greek, alongside expertise in ancient literature, history, and civilization. The curriculum combines advanced language coursework with specialized seminars that allow students to develop comprehensive knowledge of these fields. Through sustained engagement with original texts, students explore major thematic issues in Classics. The program prepares students for careers in secondary education, related fields, and doctoral studies, fostering crucial analytical skills and in-depth knowledge of the ancient world.

Course Structure

The MA in Classics requires 30 credits (10 courses) of graduate-level study in Latin and Greek. Students must also complete an independent reading list and demonstrate proficiency in a modern foreign language (typically French or German). The program culminates in comprehensive written and oral exams. Six advanced language courses are typically available each year, with additional opportunities through a Boston-area consortium. Students are encouraged to expand on research for presentation at professional conferences. For MA in Latin program, four courses are available per year. Students can supplement their studies with consortium courses. Comprehensive exams test students' mastery of Latin poetry and prose through translation and essay writing.
