The French Studies major at Boston College provides students with a strong foundation in the French language and culture. The program emphasizes developing exceptional competence in French, enabling students to engage deeply with French literature and cultural artifacts. Students build upon their linguistic skills by analyzing various French texts and contexts, honing their ability to articulate and defend original ideas. The curriculum blends language acquisition with literary and cultural exploration, preparing students for diverse career paths or graduate studies. The program includes coursework in French writing, drama, poetry, narrative forms, advanced language studies, and French culture and civilization. Students begin at a level suitable to their proficiency and can choose from various electives. The minor offers similar benefits but with fewer course requirements.
The French Studies major requires 30 credits (10 three-credit courses). This includes 12 credits (4 courses) from a selection of foundational courses such as French Writing Workshop, Introduction to Drama and Poetry, Introduction to Narrative Forms, Masterpieces of French Literature, Advanced Language Studies in French, and Topics in French Culture and Civilization. An additional 12 credits are required from 4 advanced courses (4000 level or above) in French language, literature, or culture. Finally, 6 credits come from 2 elective courses. Electives can include FREN 2210 (as an entry-level course), additional 3000 or 4000-level courses in French, or related courses with departmental permission. The minor requires 18 credits (6 three-credit courses). This includes 6 credits (2 courses) from the foundation courses mentioned above, 3 credits (1 course) at the 4000 or 7000 level, and 9 credits (3 elective courses). These electives can include FREN 2209 and FREN 2210 (as entry-level courses), additional 3000 or 4000-level courses, or related courses. Study abroad options also offer credit transfer opportunities, with limitations on the number of credits transferable and restrictions on courses conducted in English.
