Course Overview!

The Studio Art major at Boston College is a four-year program designed to equip students with the technical skills, visual awareness, and historical understanding necessary for a career in the visual arts. Students explore various media and develop a strong conceptual understanding of art-making. The program culminates in a senior project, exhibited on campus. The curriculum covers a range of introductory and advanced courses in different media like drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, and digital arts. Students also delve into art history and develop their critical thinking and communication skills through written and oral presentations. The program emphasizes the development of technical proficiency, individual artistic expression, and an understanding of art within a broader cultural context.

Course Structure

The Studio Art major requires 11 courses (33 credits). It begins with two introductory courses from a selection that includes drawing, painting, design, printmaking, ceramics, digital arts, and photography, and a required course on Issues and Approaches to Studio Art. Students must complete one course from a selection of art history courses focused on postwar art or contemporary art. The program also includes three electives at the 2000 or 3000 level and two additional electives at the 3000 or 4000 level (excluding the senior project), along with a year-long senior project (two courses). The major also allows for specialization in Architecture Studies, adding requirements in design thinking, digital design, architectural design, and architectural history courses. A senior project is required for graduation.
