Course Overview!

The Bachelor of Arts in Transformative Educational Studies at Boston College is a four-year program designed to prepare students for leadership roles in education and related fields. The curriculum explores fundamental educational questions within the context of social and educational transformation. Students critically examine existing educational practices, focusing on diversity, equity, inclusion, global perspectives, and formative education. The program emphasizes reflective practice, enabling students to articulate their educational aims and understand the historical context of contemporary educational debates. Graduates develop skills in critical analysis, persuasive argumentation, and informed decision-making, preparing them for diverse career paths within education, policy, and social change sectors.

Course Structure

The program for the Class of 2028 and beyond consists of three components: Three or four core courses covering topics such as 'The Educational Conversation,' 'Reimagining School and Society,' 'Transformative Teaching and Learning,' and 'Learning Cultures.' A senior seminar focusing on transformative education. Six elective courses chosen from a wide range of subjects including globalization, language, religion and education, technology in education, and various aspects of social justice in education. The curriculum provides flexibility, yet emphasizes a strong foundation in core educational theories and practices. Students in the Class of 2025, 2026, and 2027 follow a slightly different structure with four core courses and three global perspectives courses, along with electives. Regardless of the cohort, the program stresses critical thinking, reflective practice, and a commitment to social justice in education.
