Course Overview!

This online program from Ball State University adds an Indiana license for exceptional needs—intense interventions to an existing teaching license. The program prepares educators to support students with moderate to profound intellectual impairment, multiple disabilities, orthopedic impairment, autism, traumatic brain injury, and other disabilities. The developmental levels covered are based on the applicant's existing teaching license. The program is 100% online and includes coursework and practicum experiences. Before starting, you must meet with the Office of Teacher Education Services for an evaluation that will determine your specific course requirements. This program is part of Ball State's Teachers College, accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation.

Course Structure

The program's coursework is tailored to each student based on their existing license and the evaluation from the Office of Teacher Education Services. However, potential courses include: Introduction to Students with Orthopedic, Sensory, and Multiple Disabilities (SPCE 566), Introduction to Students with Intense Intervention Needs (SPCE 577), Educational Methods for Students with Intense Intervention Needs (SPCE 578), Educational Methods for Students with Orthopedic-Sensory-Multiple Disabilities (SPCE 579), Educating High School Students with Intense Intervention Needs (SPCE 580), Education of Exceptional Children (SPCE 600), ABA for Teachers (SPCE 604), Computer Technology and the Learner with Special Needs (SPCE 631), Practicum in Special Education: Physical Impairment (SPCE 693), and Practicum in Special Education: Intense Intervention (SPCE 698). The number of credit hours varies by course, with practicums ranging from 1-9 credit hours. Specific course requirements are determined during the initial evaluation.
