Course Overview!

Ball State University's PhD in School Psychology program is a full-time, on-campus program designed to prepare students for careers as licensed psychologists. The program emphasizes the scientist-practitioner model, incorporating elements of advocacy and social justice, and aligning with both APA and NASP standards. Students gain comprehensive training in assessment, consultation, prevention, intervention, ethical and legal considerations, research, and cultural diversity. The curriculum focuses on developing professional skills crucial for diverse work settings, including schools, private practices, and community mental health. Graduates are well-equipped to work with children, adolescents, their families, and educators, advocating for inclusivity and equity.

Course Structure

The PhD program spans five years of full-time study, comprising coursework, practicums, and a final internship. The curriculum covers core competencies in health service psychology, encompassing research methodology, ethical and legal standards, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Students also undergo extensive training in psychological assessment, consultation, prevention and intervention strategies, and supervision. A significant component is the completion of supervised applied training experiences in real-world settings, including a year-long practicum, externship, an advanced practicum, and a doctoral-level internship. Students choose a cognate area of specialization (e.g., neuropsychology, developmental psychology, or educational psychology), completing at least 15 credit hours within this focus.
