Course Overview!

The Master of Music (MM) program at Ball State University is a two-year, in-depth course of study designed for highly gifted students specializing in performance, education, theory, composition, or research. Students complete 30-32 credit hours, culminating in a project, recital, thesis, or research paper. The program includes an audition or portfolio review for admission and a master's oral exit exam. It features both on-campus and online (Music Education concentration) options. The program provides access to state-of-the-art facilities including recital halls and recording studios and offers assistantship opportunities to alleviate tuition costs.

Course Structure

The MM program's curriculum varies depending on the chosen concentration (Conducting, History and Musicology, Composition, Education, Performance, Piano Accompanying, Theory, Woodwinds). Specific program content and requirements are detailed in the School of Music Graduate Handbook. All students complete a core curriculum supplemented by coursework specific to their area of study. The final year involves the completion of a major project or thesis. An optional certificate in Entrepreneurial Music, combining music and business courses, is available to MM and MA students.
