Ball State University's Master of Arts in School Counseling is a two-year, on-campus program preparing students for school counselor licensure (preK-12) in Indiana. The curriculum emphasizes social justice and equity, integrating theory with practical experience. Students develop skills in individual and group counseling, consultation, collaboration, advocacy, and leadership. The program includes extensive supervised practica and internships totaling over 800 hours in various school settings. The program is nationally recognized and aligned with Indiana licensure requirements and ASCA standards.
The MA in School Counseling curriculum covers eight core areas: professional counseling orientation and ethical practice; social and cultural diversity; human growth and development; career development; counseling and helping relationships; group counseling and group work; assessment and testing; and research and program evaluation. Three school counseling specialty areas are also addressed: foundations, contextual dimensions, and practice. The program involves a significant amount of fieldwork through practicum and internship experiences in elementary, secondary schools, summer camps and Pre-K settings.
