Ball State University's Pre-Optometry Program is a non-degree program designed to prepare students for admission to a Doctor of Optometry program accredited by the American Optometric Association. The Pre-Optometry program at Ball State University includes a set of required courses in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and psychology. Required biology courses cover principles of biology, genetics or human physiology, microbiology, human anatomy, and vertebrate structure and development. Chemistry requirements include general chemistry, organic chemistry (with lab), and biochemistry (with lab). Physics encompasses general physics I and II. Mathematics involves calculus (I and optionally II) and statistics or biometry. Psychology includes the introductory course and possibly additional electives. Additionally, students must complete English composition and an English elective. Depending on the chosen optometry school, additional courses in arts and humanities, foreign languages, and social and behavioral sciences might be needed.
