Course Overview!

The Certificate in Biotechnology at Ball State University offers a focused program designed to provide students with fundamental knowledge and practical skills in various biotechnology fields. The curriculum covers key techniques such as recombinant DNA and RNA manipulation, polymerase chain reaction applications, protein isolation and analysis, and cell culture methods. Students will also gain experience in data analysis through biometry. The program allows for elective choices, including internships or research opportunities, depending upon the candidate's interest. The certificate prepares graduates for entry-level positions or further studies in the biotechnology sector.

Course Structure

The Certificate in Biotechnology program requires 15-20 credit hours. Core courses cover essential laboratory techniques in molecular biology and cell biology, including recombinant DNA and RNA technologies (BIOT 490), polymerase chain reaction theory and applications (BIOT 491), protein isolation and characterization (BIOT 492), and cell culture methods (BIOT 494). A course in biometry (BIO 448) provides a foundation in data analysis. Students can select additional credits from internship opportunities in biology (BIO 369), practicums (BIO 394), or undergraduate research (BIO 498), or other courses approved by the program coordinator. Successful completion requires a minimum grade of 'C' in all required courses. A prerequisite course, BIO 215, is also required prior to beginning the program.
