Course Overview!

The Graduate Certificate in Foundational Mathematics Teaching in the Community College is designed for community college mathematics instructors seeking to enhance their teaching skills and knowledge. The program aims to equip instructors with the advanced mathematical content and pedagogical approaches necessary for effective teaching at the foundational level. The curriculum emphasizes engaging foundational learners with mathematical concepts while improving student outcomes, leading to increased success in further studies or the workplace. The certificate program provides 15 of the 18 credits needed for math credentialing in many community colleges, making it particularly beneficial for those pursuing or mandated to undertake advanced mathematics coursework.

Course Structure

The 15-credit certificate program consists of required courses and electives. Required courses include MATH 613: Quantitative Reasoning from an Advanced Viewpoint, MATH 614: Algebraic Reasoning, and MATH 623: Probability, Data Analysis, and Statistical Reasoning (totaling 9 credits). Students must then choose 6 credits' worth of electives from the following options: MATH 615: Number Concepts and Number Theory, MATH 616: Rational Numbers and Proportional Reasoning, and MATH 640: Measurement Concepts and Geometric Reasoning. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required to receive the certificate, and no grade lower than a C will count toward completion. Transfer credits are not accepted. The program is entirely online.
