Course Overview!

The Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Geography with a concentration in Geographic Information Science (GIS) at Ball State University is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to solve social and environmental problems using advanced spatial information technology. The program blends theoretical understanding with practical application of GIS software and techniques. Students learn to visualize information, analyze spatial data, manage projects, and communicate findings effectively to both expert and non-expert audiences. Course Structure

The GIS program requires 51 to 54 credits beyond the University's core curriculum. It incorporates core geography courses along with specialized GIScience courses. The curriculum covers core GIS concepts, remote sensing, cartography and data visualization, advanced GIS analysis, and GIS system design. Students gain practical experience using industry-standard software and hardware in a state-of-the-art GIS lab, and are expected to complete an internship. Coursework also emphasizes communication and project management skills. Minors in computer science, geology, mathematics, urban planning, biology, or natural resources and environmental management are recommended to complement the degree.
