Course Overview!

Ball State University's Natural Resources and Environmental Management (NREM) program offers a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree focusing on preserving natural resources and improving environmental quality. The interdisciplinary curriculum blends natural and social sciences, preparing students for careers in environmental fields. Students gain practical experience through community-based projects and field studies at the Ball State Field Station, learning to apply scientific methods, collect data (water, soil, social), understand environmental regulations, and communicate effectively. The program also emphasizes civic engagement and networking opportunities with alumni. Students can choose concentrations in Natural Resources or Environmental Management, each with specific course clusters and opportunities for certifications (e.g., Hazardous Materials training). The program is designed to prepare graduates for immediate employment or further graduate studies.

Course Structure

The NREM program comprises a University Core Curriculum (60 credits for Natural Resources, 58 for Environmental Management) and major-specific coursework. Core courses include general chemistry, math, water, soil, air, energy and mineral resources, and integrated resource management. Concentrations (Natural Resources or Environmental Management) require 34 credits. Students select courses from specified clusters (e.g., Recreation and Interpretation, Sustainable Development, Soil and Water Conservation for Natural Resources; Environmental Remediation, Emergency Response, Soil and Water Conservation for Environmental Management). Electives or a minor can also fulfill concentration requirements.
