Course Overview!

Ball State University's Early Childhood Education Licensure program prepares students to become outstanding teachers of children from birth to the 3rd grade. The curriculum emphasizes child development theory, research, developmentally appropriate practices, and culturally responsive teaching within a social justice framework. Students learn about human growth and development, elementary classroom planning, and educational psychology. The program includes significant field experience through partnerships with elementary schools and early childhood centers, as well as opportunities for student teaching in various locations including the US and abroad. Community engagement and immersive learning projects provide hands-on experience in real-world settings.

Course Structure

The four-year program integrates coursework in child development, educational psychology, classroom planning, and culturally responsive teaching. Students engage in fieldwork, including practicums and a semester of student teaching in various settings. The program emphasizes the importance of family and community engagement and offers opportunities for study abroad and immersive learning experiences with community organizations like museums and child care centers. Emphasis is placed on preparing teachers who are culturally responsive and dedicated to social justice. Students may choose to participate in a living-learning community during their freshman year.
