The Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Economics at Ball State University offers a comprehensive education in economic principles and their applications across various sectors. The program emphasizes a strong theoretical foundation complemented by practical skills development. Students benefit from small class sizes, interaction with full-time professors, and opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities such as the Federal Reserve Challenge Competition and engage with resources like the Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute and the Center for Business and Economic Research. Students can choose from three options: Business, focusing on finance, management, and marketing; Health Economics & Public Policy; and Liberal Arts, providing various concentrations such as General Economics, Economics and Law, and Financial Economics. The curriculum incorporates core economics coursework alongside university core curriculum requirements, business foundation courses (for the Business option), and elective choices that allow students to tailor their education to their career goals.
The economics major consists of four groups of courses: the University Core Curriculum, foundation courses (either business or liberal arts depending on the chosen option), specialized economics coursework, and general electives. A calculus course is strongly recommended. The Business option includes Miller College of Business core requirements and business courses. The Health Economics & Public Policy option allows students to choose from courses examining health economics and public policy, along with electives from the College of Health. The Political Economy option focuses on a core of economics courses while lacking business or mathematics requirements. The Liberal Arts option offers concentrations in General Economics, Economics and Law, and Financial Economics, without requiring all core business courses.
