Course Overview!

Ball State University's Legal Studies program offers a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree designed to prepare students for careers in various legal fields. The curriculum provides a strong foundation in legal theories and practical skills, covering areas such as family law, civil and criminal litigation, alternative dispute resolution, constitutional law, and business law. Students can choose between a business law or public law option, allowing them to specialize in their area of interest. The program includes a required internship offering practical experience with practicing attorneys and paralegals. Graduates are well-prepared for law school or direct entry into various legal professions. Many graduates have secured partial or full scholarships to attend prestigious law schools across the country. The program is approved by the American Bar Association, and is one of fewer than 300 approved nationally.

Course Structure

The Legal Studies program at Ball State University consists of the University Core Curriculum, a common core of legal studies coursework, and specialized coursework based on the chosen option (Public Law or Business Law). The Business Law option focuses on areas such as business organizations, insurance, finance, accounting, and law office management. Relevant courses include Principles of Business Law, Advanced Legal Research and Writing, Advanced Litigation and Alternative Dispute Resolution, and Law and Economics. The Public Law option covers government, politics, public policy, and the legal aspects of these areas. Courses include Family Law, Litigation, Advanced Legal Research and Writing, and American Constitutional Law. All students must complete an internship working with practicing attorneys and paralegals.
